CCDBR Disaster Relief Team reviews Pandemic Flu Plan

Baton Rouge--April 30, 2009--Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge is preparing to respond to the needs of our community in the event a Pandemic Flu strikes. The leadership team has reviewed the agency's Incident Management Plan traditionally activated before a hurricane strike. While much of the structure of the Plan remains in place, staff modified the plan to reflect a potential pandemic. Currently, we are monitoring the situation, maintaining contact with our national CCUSA Disaster Response team, and working to identify vulnerabilities within the organization, our diocese and our community.

Disaster Strikes! How can you help? Catholic Charities offers these tips for helping after disaster

Baton Rouge—The morning after the news broke of the destruction in Joplin, Missouri, the phones at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge (CCDBR) started ringing.

“We aren’t surprised that people in Louisiana want to help” said David Aguillard, CCDBR Executive Director.

The people of South Louisiana are traditionally known for being some of the most generous in the country. Since the outpouring of support for the state after Hurricane Katrina, that tradition grew even stronger.

Learn more about Foster Grandparents
Community Support Requested: Foster Grandparents and their children need your help.  Through this program, at-risk children are “adopted” by Foster Grandparents in places such as schools and head start centers.  And it makes a difference. Their students’ attendance improves, grades go up, and behavior problems go down.  The program, however, is in peril.  These low-income seniors serve out of an abundance of love. Necessary expenses of the Foster Grandparents Program, including their mileage and lunch money, have been de-funded by the State due to the budget crisis. Every donated dollar will help them continue to teach their children. They ALL need your support. Click here to make an online donation. Be sure to select "Foster Grandparents" on Program Designation drop-down menu. Or mail a check to "Catholic Charities, P. O. Box 1668, Baton Rouge, LA  70821." Note "Foster Grandparents" on the check memo.

Prayer for Safety In Hurricane Season

The bishops of Louisiana have asked the faithful to pray the following prayer, daily if possible during the hurricane season which extends each year from June 1 to November 30, that we and our lands and belongings may be preserved safe from harm.

Prayer for Safety In Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world,
hear the humble voices of your children.
The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order
and returned to its former quietude.

Senior Worker

Children’s laughter floated from the back of the Restoration Pregancy Resource Center as receptionist Magdeline Blanco answers the phone.

“I’m blessed. How are you?” she cheerily responded to the caller.

Sixty-seven-year-old Blanco will tell anyone that God has greatly blessed her, even as she relates how her eldest son passed away and she lost her home in Hurricane Katrina. One of those many blessings, she said, has been the Senior Employment program, sponsored by Catholic Charities, which allows her to work with the pregnancy center.
